Von 1955 bis 1977 habe ich in der US-Marine gedient, meistens als Marineflieger. Daraus ergab sich, dass ich viel von der Welt zu sehen bekam.Die Flugzeugträger, auf denen ich diente, liefen regelmäßig europäische Häfen an, wie auch andere Häfen rund um die Welt. Auch in den Jahren seit meinem Abschied aus der Marine bin ich ausgiebig gereist. Aus meinen Reisen durch ganz Europa ist Deutschland als mein Lieblingsland hervorgegangen. Auf meinen Besuchen lernte ich die Deutschen als liebenswürdige, fleißige, disziplinierte und zivilisierte Menschen kennen, die in Vielem den traditionellen Amerikanern ähneln. In keiner Weise ähnelten sie den Stereotypen, wie sie in Antinazi-Filmen, Büchern und Artikeln dargestellt werden, denen wir all die Jahre ausgesetzt waren. Ich bin Jahrgang 1937. Meine Generation ist praktisch mit antideutscher Propaganda überschwemmt aufgewachsen. Uns wurde buchstäblich beigebracht, die Deutschen als Volk zu hassen. Doch die Deutschen, denen ich im Laufe der Jahre begegnete, oder mit denen ich mich anfreundete, schienen sich nicht von anderen Europäern, oder nicht einmal von Amerikanern zu unterscheiden, und sie schienen auch nicht mehr zu Gewalt und Militarismus zu neigen als andere ...

Die englische Originalausgabe erschien 2012 unter dem Titel »The Myth of German Villainy« und ist hier als ebook, jedoch auch bei codoh.com in gedruckter Form erhältlich. Die 2019 erschienene Ausgabe in deutscher Übersetzung gibt es beim Verlag »Der Schelm« (derschalem.com).

Mindestens Kapitel 13 ist fehlerhaft. Es endet nach ca. 54:14, obwohl es eigentlich über 70 Minuten lang sein sollte.
